Mary Stafford Shurden
Architectural Designer
Coming from the small-town charm of Drew, Mississippi, to the historic streets of Charleston, Mary brings a fresh perspective and passion for architectural preservation to Coastal Creek Design. Her journey through architecture school, enriched by internships at firms like Kudzu Collective and Beau Clowney Architects, cultivated her love for residential design and historic preservation.
Armed with a bachelor’s degree in Architecture and minors in Interior Design and Historic Preservation from Mississippi State University, Mary specializes in documenting existing conditions for renovations while assisting with design work. “Drawing existing conditions has taught me so much about how buildings physically come together,” she shares. “I’m excited to keep learning about design and working with clients here in the Lowcountry.”
Mary values consistency and collaboration in her work, knowing that successful solutions come from focusing on what matters to both the team and the client. At Coastal Creek Design, she appreciates how the team supports each person’s professional journey through open communication and shared learning.
The Lowcountry’s unique environment inspires Mary to focus on the finer details of both architecture and life. She found her way to Charleston early in college, falling in love with the city’s approach to historic preservation and its small-town feel that reminds her of home.
When she’s not crafting architectural designs, you might find Mary pursuing her interest in furniture refurbishment and upholstery, teaching herself to sew, or exploring Charleston’s waters as an advanced scuba diver.
